The “mismatch that continues to exist between teaching materials and real language” [Bargiela-C./Nickerson/Planken 2007] was recently confirmed by F. Sharifian [2017], who found that teachers of English did not generally address the diversity of Englishes used world-wide. Our guiding question is therefore: Are we teaching the right things? We argue that the new CEFR-COMPANION VOLUME provides a helpful approach to teaching English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and provide insight into the new descriptor scales and suggest teaching material and methods from our own teaching experience.

Biographical information:Judith Mader was Head of Languages at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management; she is also an author and co-author of various coursebooks published by Hueber. Rudi Camerer directs elc-European Language Competence, a consultancy based in Frankfurt/M. and Saarbrücken. Together with Prof. Jürgen Quetz he translated the CEFR-Companion Volume into German.
